Title: Influence of the sitting postures to flank muscles in its muscle thickness and activities

【Purpose】 To identify flank muscle activities associated with the postural change using an ultrasonography and electromyograph.
【Methods】 Nine healthy volunteers have participated. After the measurement of muscle thickness and activities in the supine position with quiet breathing and maximal expiration, we measured them again in six different sitting postures. These postures are forward, upright and backward trunk positions in both hunchbacked and stretched postures. Muscle thickness was measured in obliquus externus abdominis muscle(EO), obliquus internus abdominis muscle(IO) and transversus abdominis muscle(TA) using an ultrasonography. Muscle activities were measured in EO and IO using a surface electromyograph.
【Result】 In the electromyograph, only IO showed significance difference in upright trunk in stretched posture(UTPSP) when compared with hunchbacked posture in forward, upright and backward trunk positions. During quiet breathing, significant difference of IO in both forward and backward trunk positions in hunchbacked posture, and forward trunk position in stretched posture against UTPSP was observed.
【Conclusion】 We have not set respiratory patterns. As a result, isometric contraction has occurred during maximal expiration where it showed little changes in muscle thickness and only the changes in electromyograph have shown significant differences. On the other hand, in the UTPSP during quiet breathing showed lower muscle activities compare to the ones in supine position and hunchbacked posture. The UTPSP is considered to be the one where the activity of IO is not used to keep the posture. In addition, the electromyogram of IO during maximal expiration showed this is the posture where respiratory muscle demonstrates more of its function.
